Fed Dispatch: Air and Ground Crews Responding to Wildfires North of US Hwy 160

From Federal Dispatch

DURANGO INTERAGENCY FIRE DISPATCH

U.S. Forest Service w Bureau of Land Management w National Park Service w Bureau of Indian Affairs w Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  July 10, 2014, 2:10 pm

Air and Ground Crews Responding to Wildfires North of US Highway 160

DURANGO – A helicopter and ground crews are working the KV Fire about one and a half miles north of US Highway 160 up the First Fork Road on the San Juan National Forest.  The lightning-caused wildfire, which is headed uphill on the west side of the Piedra River, is now estimated at about five acres in size.  Gusty winds are expected in the area, and the fire could threaten nearby power lines and communication lines to the south.  La Plata Electric Association has been notified and is on site.  The fire is not threatening any other structures at this time.

A helicopter and a single engine air tanker (SEAT) are working the fire, as is one 20-person ground crew.  Another SEAT, two heavy air tankers, and additional firefighting crews, including a hot shot team, have been ordered. The fire was ignited last night by lightning, along with two other small fires, also burning near the First Fork Road.  One of those is currently estimated at ¼ acre and the other at 1/10th of an acre.  The firefighting effort is addressing these smaller fires in addition to the KV Fire.

FLASH FLOOD WATCH continues for #LaPlataCo so watch out for fire?

Storms are expected to be a repeat of yesterday with moisture building though the afternoon. Widespread thunderstorms are expected across the region with the potential for heavy downpours at times.

Why watch for fires when a flash flood watch is in effect? The type of storm systems we have at this time of year are usually scattered and potentially intense. You might get an inch of rain in a half hour while down the road gets nothing. There are areas around the County that have not seen any significant rain in months, even with these recent storms. With the intensity of summer thunderstorms, lighting is a big concern. It often strikes on the outskirts of the storms where ground may be dry. Fires can start many days after a strike. We've seen fires smolder in roots for up to 14 days before emerging on a hot day! Residents in the South half of La Plata County are all too familiar with lightning fires.
So with more storms comes more lightning; watch for fire.

Want to know more about lightning? Colorado Lightning Safety

Here are some quick tips:

  • In the mountains lighting can strike anywhere and can strike before you see clouds. Watch weather forecasting and plan your trip around when storms build. Don't wait till you see the thunderheads build to get off the peaks.
  • Don't hide under a tree as shelter from the rain. Do bring gear to manage the elements and get lower when lightning is coming.
  • If you are going into the mountains for extended periods, get a small weather radio. Many family radios have weather radio receivers. You won't get an alert like in tornado country so listen to the recording several times throughout the day to get updated info.
  • Lightning travels around the outside surface of things (mostly). If you are in a car, close the windows and keep inside. If you are in a structure stay away from anything that can conduct lightning like faucets, hanging lamps, anything plugged in.
  • If you are stuck outside move to lower ground. If you feel the static charge of a coming strike, get away from tall or metal things and squat onto your toes. A clump of trees is likely safer than a single tree.

These pictures are from a sudden intense deluge over a couple of square acres just a few Septembers ago. Don't be caught off guard!

If you go in the woods, take the proper gear. Get CORSAR and be prepared for the worst.

If you get lost, hurt, sick or stuck and can't get out of the woods on your own, the Sheriffs of Colorado have the statutory obligation to perform search and rescue operations to get you out. This goes for every inch of the County except tribal land. The portions of San Juan National Forest and Weminuche Wilderness in La Plata County are covered by the County Sheriff. In La Plata County as with most Colorado counties, Sheriff Schirard has organized volunteers to perform this duty.

La Plata County Search and Rescue is a nonprofit organization that funds its training and equipment through donations and grants. It's volunteers that are the ones spending their time away from home and loved ones to train and respond for others. Often times this comes at personal risk and personal expense, but never ask anything in return. Butch Knowlton with the Sheriff's Dept. and Emergency Management gives oversight and guidance to the group for the County.

Some things are not free, like helicopters and planes to find you or transport people and gear to you or to get you out. The Sheriff pays for those expenses through County funds. We don't charge you for those costs on searches and rescues. At $1500 to $5000 per hour, those helicopters can add up fast over the year or on a single mission. Our only hope to recover some of those costs is through the Colorado Outdoor Search and Rescue Fund. If you have a hunting or fishing license, if you registered an OHV (ATV, UTV, dirtbike or snowmobile), or if you purchased a CORSAR card from an outdoor retailer; then you could potentially save the County thousands of dollars. The fund can also pay for equipment lost or damaged helping you or a family member, whether the equipment was team or volunteer owned. It can pay for things like fuel to transport volunteers' horses or ATVs. Every penny left over at the end of the year goes back to training and equipment for the volunteer teams across the state. For the anti-government types, the fund doesn't pay for county salaries or to operate county owned equipment.

Some things can be charged like medical transport from ambulance service or fire district, or if in connection to criminal activity.

Colorado's CORSAR program is considered one of the most accepted and successful programs in the Country. EVERYONE who goes onto public land of any sort in Colorado should be sure to have paid into the fund that supports the volunteers who will come to save you the day you need it.

So far in 2014, La Plata County Search and Rescue has rescued 6 mountain bikers, 9 climbers, 1 horseback rider, 4 lost hikers, 2 stuck in a 4x4, 2 swimmers, and 2 out of bounds skiers. All but 4 people rescued could be considered experts in their sport. So far, we only know of 4 out of the 26 people rescued who paid into the CORSAR fund.

Get CORSAR now. $3 per year or $12 for 5 years

FIRE WEATHER WATCH issued for July 3 for dry thunderstorms and gusty outflow wind

La Plata County has not issued any fire restrictions, however this does not mean that fire danger isn't very high throughout the region. As always this time of year, be extremely careful if you use any flame or sparks. Take extra care to be sure every ember is out cold.
