Purple Cliffs Fire Update at 7:45 p.m.


Durango, CO – Firefighters report at this time they have a perimeter line and they are continuing to extinguish hot spots within the perimeter.  Crews will continue to work on the fire this evening and will monitor the fire throughout the night.  The New Air Helecopter will continue to drop water on the fire until dark.

“Through the prompt efforts of Durango Fire and Rescue Authority, the U.S. Forest Service and the helicopter, we were able to deal with the fire quickly and prevent the spread of the wildfire,” said Butch Knowlton, La Plata County’s Emergency Management Director.

Wildfire Near Durango

Purple Cliffs Fire Update at 5:00 p.m.


Durango, CO – Two Durango Fire and Rescue Authority crews and one U.S. Forest Service crew have arrived at the fire scene.  A New Air Helicopter has been dumping water on the flames for the last 30 minutes.  The fire is burning on private land approximately one-half mile north of the Animas Airpark runway.  Fire crews are reporting a low rate of spread and anticipate positive gains on the fire in the next two hours.  Smoke may be visible from the fire in the Durango area, but at this time, the fire poses no immediate threat to properties within the City of Durango.  Ground crews indicate that the fire size is approximately ¼ acre in size.

There are no structures in the immediate area of the fire and the fire is burning in a moderate growth of pinion/juniper stands.  Crews suspect the fire was started by a lightning strike, but the investigation will determine that this evening.

Durango Fire & Rescue Authority
Responding to Fire Above Purple Cliffs near Durango


Durango, CO – Just before 4:00 PM Durango Fire and Rescue Authority (DFRA) was dispatched to a fire above the purple cliffs west of Home Depot.  Three DFRA crews and a helicopter are in the area combating the fire.  At this time, the there is no significant risk, but there will be smoke visible on the ridgeline south of Durango and west of the Home Depot/Walmart area. 

Updated information will be provided as crews combat this fire.
